In New York State you must register in advance in order to be eligible to vote.

You can register very easily by filling out a form at your county Board of Elections. You can also pick up a form at many libraries and post offices. Or request one on-line from the State Board of Elections or call 1-800-FOR-VOTE.

If you would like to vote in all Independence Party primaries or run for party office, be sure to check the box next to "Independence Party" on the form.

(You'll be able to vote in statewide and maybe some local Independence Party primaries even if you don't register in any party.)

If you need more information, go to the State Board of Elections web site at http://www.elections.state.ny.us, where you can also download a PDF registration form to mail to your county Board of Elections.

Note: It's probably best not to use the so-called motor-voter registration forms at the Department of Motor Vehicles. We've heard of instances of people filling out forms and not being properly registered. You're also taking a chance if you register on the street and hand the form back to someone you don't know. If you use either of these methods and don't get a card in the mail from the Board of Elections within a reasonable period, you should double check with the Board of Elections to make sure you are registered.

Absentee Voting

If you will not be physically able to get to your polling place on election day, you may vote by absentee ballot. Download an application form here and bring or mail it to your county Board of Elections before the deadline stated on the form. The application is in PDF format and you will need Adobe Acrobat Reader to print it.
